I always enjoy coming upon Jesus in the Old Testament. He kind of holds things together, doesn't he?

Joshua 5:13-15

When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?”

And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the Lord. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

And the commander of the Lord's army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so.

  4. The Bible (both Old and New Testament) is filled with types and shadows of the Messiah. Look at these Scriptures:

Jo 5:39 - Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Jesus introduced His ministry by quoting from Isaiah 61:1-3 to announce the works of Messiah He was about to do:

Lk 4:17-21 - "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me...(Jesus) This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears" An interesting note is that Jesus deliberately stopped in the middle of verse 3, quoting from Isaiah, "and he closed the book" (verse 20). There were 13 gospels of Messiah in total, and Jesus only fulfilled 6 of them. All of these gospels had to be preached by Messiah (God as a Man on earth). The next was "the day of vengeance of our God." Think about it!

There are many more Scriptures that Jesus quoted to show He was spoken of all throughout the "Old" testament. It was also said in the Book of Revelation, "the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy"

The upshot is that the life and work of Jesus was prophesied throughout the books of Moses, the Psalms and the Prophets. In addition, God isn't done with His work of Messiah on this planet. And the next portion of it is not going to be accepted or appreciated by most people.

  5. I'm new to reading your blog Kim and appreciate your deep love of scripture. However, I believe that your assertion that the mysterious figure who appears to Joshua is Our Lord is incorrect for two reasons: First, he says that he is commander of the army of the Lord, not the Lord Himself. Second, because when Joshua falls to the earth to try to worship him, he stops him. Worship is for God alone and often when angels appear in the Old Testament their aspect is so awe-inspiring (no cute, fluffy angels there) that the human mistakes them for God; the Holy Angel always corrects them. Traditionally, St. Michael is identified as the captain of The Lord of Hosts, (who utters the battle-cry, "Who is like God!"
I look forward to reading more of your blog.
