My heart was so hard after many years of working as a journalist in Washington. Late in my career I found this verse and put it in my top desk drawer to guide me when I was angry and disheartened by all I saw. It helped greatly, but it was also one of the things that spurred me to retire early.

Philippians 4:8-9
Fox News Washington Bureau Chief

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

  2. This is a little off-topic, but please bear with me.
I worked in the limousine business for 12 years in the Chicago area. I met Mrs. Hume at ORD on a Friday, sometime in the mid-2000s. The traffic that day was horrible and Mrs. Hume was stuck in the car with me for almost an hour and a half. I can honestly say that out of the 13,000 plus people I encountered during those years in the business, Mrs. Hume was one of the nicest persons I've met (actually, she's in a tie for #1 with one other person).
Mrs. Hume, I found this link on your husband's Twitter and am so happy I did. I'm glad to know that I'll see you once again in heaven, as, I too, am a (grafted-in) branch :)

    1. This is amazing. I can't believe you found this blog and that you remembered me among all your passengers. It seems that Jesus is at work in us always and that he touches us and the people we touch. I'm sure your spirit was my motivation that day. Thank you, and when His Kingdom comes I'll look for you.

    2. Please forgive me, but I'd like others to know how thoughtful and kind you were that day.
You arrived for a weekend conference at Cantigny, which is normally a 30 minute drive from ORD. I'm not sure why, but Cantigny didn't order private cars for that conference, so you were forced to share the ride with another passenger, who had to be dropped off on the way. As I mentioned in the other post, the traffic (rush hour) was horrible that Friday, and I believe you were in the car for about an hour forty minutes.
A (big) national news story had broken hours earlier and you were keeping us informed of the latest from information you were receiving from Fox, which certainly made the ride more interesting.
(Side note: When I dropped off the first customer, I recall him mentioning how nice you were as we were getting his bags out of the trunk, so I wasn't the only one you left an impression on that day)
Now here's the part that really made you memorable for me. We finally arrived at the McCormick mansion at Cantigny, where hoeur d'oeuvres were already being served (according to the itinerary), you asked me if I was going to be OK. I didn't know what you meant, as that wasn't a question I was used to hearing (especially after what you just went through). You then asked if you could go in and get some food to bring out to me! I think I may have laughed and said, "No thank you, I'm fine" ... being totally blown-away by your thoughtfulness. You then asked, "Are you sure?" I said, "Yes, and thank you again for asking" (or something to that effect). As I drove out of there I was thinking "Who does that?!". Apparently, Kim Hume does that :)
I've told many people this story over the years and hopefully some more will see it here ... thank you again for your kindness that day.
