This is the best sentence ever written about human nature. Our hearts ARE hard, what little faith we have is in our own efforts. "Five loaves, a couple of fish, that's not nearly enough. Let's go get some more." With God we do not need more. We need soft hearts to accept truth. He is.
I wonder what the Hebrew is for this verse, since the crowd was hard in the sense of the blatant rejection by the leaders...this situation seems more like ignorance....maybe a poor translation?
In context, this a reference to the earlier miracle of loaves and fishes. Now his disciples have just seen him walk on water. They are starting to understand that when he says he's God he's not kidding. I think preconceived notions hardened their hearts. They kinda, sorta, wanted to believe, but they really didn't think Jesus was the Christ. God was literally softening them up with one miracle after another. And it worked. Just think, we're still talking about it.
