Despair was once a buddy of mine. By grace, I now walk hand in hand with hope.

Psalm 27:13
I would have lost heart, unless I had believed
That I would see the goodness of the Lord
In the land of the living.

I have lifted up my soul to quite a few idols: alcohol, work, food, clothes, golf! Having a pure heart is such a challenge, but I need that blessing. Lord, I need that promised blessing.

Psalm 24:4-5
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.
He shall receive blessing from the Lord
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Blood and guts, animal sacrifice, REALLY? It all seems so awful, irrelevant and archaic. Thank God, Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice who made all that other stuff meaningless.

Leviticus 3:7-8
If he offers a lamb for his offering, then he shall offer it before the Lord,
lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it in front of the tent of meeting; and Aaron's sons shall throw its blood against the sides of the altar.

This 24/7 thing we're doing is not working out that well. We're running each other ragged. If everybody just gave it a rest on Sunday, maybe Monday wouldn't be so awful.

Exodus 23:12
Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may rest, and the son of your female servant and the stranger may be refreshed.

Picking judges is a process as ancient as Moses. We didn't get the basics of our judicial system from nowhere. And happily we have the greatest book ever for reference.

Exodus 18:21
Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens.
