This simple Proverb explains the last 8 months of my life in chronic pain. My body would not heal. Slowly God revealed to me how stiff my neck really is and in his mercy he is softening it, cell by cell, fiber by fiber. With the grace of God I may escape being broken beyond healing.
Proverbs 29:1
He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck,
will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
The "stiff neck" metaphor is taken from brute oxen kicking and tossing, resisting being enjoined to another creature, refusing to share a burden. Egocentric narcissism!
ReplyDeleteThe disharmony between Moses and Pharaoh's hardness of heart is the classic biblical example of how a "stiff neck" not yielding to any yoke of obedience will break. Like a dried-out fallen tree branch, by its own lifeless rigidity, suddenly renders it more easily broken into pieces, never to be healed or restored.
Humpy Dumpty, irretrievably broken: "Four-score Men and Four-score more, could not make Humpty Dumpty where he was before." @larrygrowe
Larry, you have described me perfectly "kicking and tossing, resisting being enjoined to another creature, refusing to share a burden. Egocentric narcissism!" With God's help I am changing. Once again thank you for your addition, very helpful. Bless you, Kim
DeleteI didn't recognize that verse, so I looked it up: "He who is often rebuked, and hardens his neck, Will suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy." NKJV, just for contrast. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMy empathies on the back/leg pain! I have spondylolisthesis, so I can relate. We can learn to lean on Him and be grateful for small things that others take for granted. If you've never read it, here's a lovely poem, "I Needed the Quiet" -- http://www.auburn.edu/~allenkc/fbf/quiet.html
Kim, You are in my thoughts and prayer.I have you on a prayer list . Our God is an awesome God and he know your every need.
